For iPhone people: the built-in Photos editing has a Shadows slider but that lifts every dark tone in the frame, including the ones you wanted. It's not the same thing as removing a cast shadow. If you've got a hard shadow across a face you need something that actually understands there's a face in there. I open removeshadow.com in Safari and save the result straight back to the camera roll.
